Mi Gente 5K Brings a Community-Centered Approach to Running in Brooklyn

New York, NY – On a Sunday morning in October, runners will gather along one of New York City’s most recognizable waterfronts for a race built around a simple idea: running can be about more than the clock.

The Mi Gente 5K at Brooklyn Bridge Park, presented by TeamWRK and We Run Uptown, will take place on Sunday, October 18, 2026, beginning at 8 a.m. at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 Lawn. The organizers describe the event as a community-centered race designed to promote unity, health equity and community, while welcoming both competitive runners and people participating with family and friends.

The event arrives at a moment when running in New York has become increasingly visible not simply as a competitive sport, but as a vehicle for community, wellness and belonging. The Mi Gente 5K is designed to sit squarely in that space.

A Race Designed for More Than Runners

A 5K is 3.1 miles—a distance accessible enough for someone taking on their first organized race and familiar enough to experienced runners looking for another opportunity to compete.

The Mi Gente 5K is deliberately being structured to accommodate both.

Participants will receive an official finisher medal and event T-shirt, while awards will be available for top finishers as well as age-group finishers. The organizers have also emphasized that participants of different experience levels are welcome, whether they are running competitively or showing up with friends and family.

That distinction is important. The language surrounding the race is less about who can run the fastest and more about creating a shared experience around movement.

The name itself—Mi Gente, or “my people”—underscores that community-oriented approach.

Brooklyn Bridge Park as the Backdrop

The race will begin at Pier 6 Lawn in Brooklyn Bridge Park, placing participants along one of the city's most dramatic stretches of waterfront.

Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 6 sits along the East River at the southern end of Brooklyn Bridge Park, a sprawling waterfront park known for its recreation spaces, lawns and views across New York Harbor.

Brooklyn Bridge Park extends roughly 1.3 miles along Brooklyn's waterfront and offers views of the Manhattan skyline and Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. That setting has helped make the park one of Brooklyn's defining outdoor destinations.

For a morning road race, the location also creates a particular kind of atmosphere: runners are surrounded by the water and city skyline while moving through one of the borough's most recognizable public spaces.

The race is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., with the RunSignup listing currently indicating an event window of approximately 8–10 a.m.

Health, Access and Community

The organizers' emphasis on health equity gives the event another dimension beyond the race itself.

The Mi Gente 5K's RunSignup page currently features fundraising for Active Plus, an organization that provides programming focused on physical health, emotional wellness, leadership development and life readiness for young people. Active Plus says it serves more than 2,500 young people annually through programs in schools, parks, housing developments, community centers and online.

The fundraising component reflects a broader connection between organized running and community health: an event can create an opportunity for people to move their own bodies while also directing attention and resources toward programs designed to improve health and well-being.

For a race carrying the name Mi Gente, that collective dimension is central to the event's identity.

Why This Race Matters to Brooklyn's Running Culture

New York has no shortage of races. Brooklyn alone has a packed fall running calendar, with multiple 5Ks and other races scheduled throughout October.

What differentiates an event like the Mi Gente 5K is therefore not simply the distance.

It is the attempt to create a race around a particular sense of community.

TeamWRK and We Run Uptown are presenting the event as a gathering point for people who may approach running differently: the competitive athlete chasing a time, the recreational runner trying a 5K for the first time, the person walking or jogging with friends, and families looking for an active Sunday morning together.

That makes the event less about a single definition of what a runner looks like and more about expanding the invitation.

And in a city where running groups have increasingly become social communities in their own right, that distinction matters.

A race can be a competition. It can also be a meeting place.

The Mi Gente 5K is being designed to be both.

The Bottom Line

On October 18, Brooklyn Bridge Park will provide the setting for a 3.1-mile race, but the organizers are pitching something larger than a morning run.

They are asking participants to show up for movement, for community and for one another.

Whether you're training for a personal best or simply looking for a reason to get outside with your people, the Mi Gente 5K offers an opportunity to put 3.1 miles on the calendar—and spend a Sunday morning moving through Brooklyn together.
