NEW YORK, Feb. 21, 2025 — Tonight, the Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center hosts the 60th Commemoration of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, known to the world as Malcolm X. Taking place in the very hall where he was assassinated, this historic gathering honors his enduring legacy and the ongoing fight for justice and equality.
Dr. Marc Lamont Hill serves as the evening’s Master of Ceremonies, guiding attendees through reflections and tributes. The Shabazz family will share personal remarks, while the prestigious Vanguard Award will be presented to notable figures, including Rev. Al Sharpton, Caroline A. Wanga, and Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump and activist Arian Simone are among the featured speakers addressing Malcolm X’s continued impact on today’s social movements.
Ben Crump, a tireless advocate for justice, has been at the forefront of some of the most significant civil rights cases in modern history. Often referred to as “Black America’s Attorney General,” Crump has represented the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others who have suffered injustices at the hands of systemic racism. His presence at tonight’s commemoration is a powerful reminder that the fight Malcolm X waged against oppression is far from over.
The night also features stirring musical performances by Kenneth Kellogg, jazz vocalist Stephanie Jordan, and bassist Eric Wheeler, bringing together art and activism in tribute to one of history’s most influential leaders.
With a sold-out venue and thousands expected to tune in via livestream, the event underscores Malcolm X’s lasting influence. Watch the livestream here: [Youtube Livestream Link]. As the evening unfolds, one question lingers in the minds of many: How will we carry forward the work he began six decades ago?
